ABB’s YuMi and DCS880 drive win Automaticon innovation awards

2018-04-18 - ABB automation solutions including the world’s first truly collaborative robot and the world's first DC drive with an integrated safety function were honored with product innovation awards at this year’s Automaticon.

Automaticon (The International Automation and Measurement Fair) is the largest gathering of manufacturers, integrators and customers from Poland’s industry automation sector. About 12,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors took part in this year’s event, which focused on Industry 4.0. As part of the event, gold medals were awarded to five of the many products on exhibit, including ABB’s YuMi dual arm collaborative robot. Innovative solutions, along with DCS880 drive, were also honored with Product of the Year awards.

YuMi® is an inherently safe collaborative robot designed to work closely with people, without the need for safety barriers. It can increase flexibility for small parts assembly tasks in sectors such as electronics, where many goods need to be mass customized in short business cycles. YuMi is also designed to be easy to setup and program, so even people without robot experience or special training can operate the robot and help it adapt to more diverse products.

Drives and Control magazine also presented its Product of the Year 2017 awards at Automaticon. In the "Safety enhancement" category, the jury awarded ABB for its DCS880 DC drive, the world's first DC drive with an integrated STO (Safe Torque Off) safety function. STO safely stops a motor connected to the drive and prevents any torque-generating motion that could damage the motor or cause it to unintentionally start. The DCS880’s integrated safety function means that the drive does not require external safety relays, which simplifies their installation into control cabinets and saves costs.

The Drives and Control magazine jury evaluated products on innovation, application possibilities, efficiency improvement and safety. In addition to the DCS880 being this year’s Product of the Year, Drives and Controls previously awarded ABB’s PSTX softstarter and the PVS800 solar inverter.

“ABB is honored to be recognized by Automaticon for our innovations, from robots that work side-by-side with workers, to drives that are more simple to install and safer to operate,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics and Motion Division. “Automation is becoming increasingly complex and we are driven by our customers’ need for innovation that simplifies their manufacturing processes while addressing key metrics including productivity, safety and Total Cost of Ownership.”

Since its 2015 introduction, YuMi has also been honored with a Golden Finger award as one of the best industrial robots at the China International Robot Show (CIROS) in Shanghai and the prestigious Invention and Entrepreneurship Award (IERA) during the Automatica trade fair in Munich, Germany.
