What will your life in ABB be really like?

We try to make it as easy as possible for you to settle in to your life in ABB. We want you to be comfortable but we also want to get you up to speed with the company and your role as quickly as possible.

Local induction
Very early in your job you will be given an induction into life on your ABB site. This will cover local health & safety, operational and administrative matters. It is important for your wellbeing that you understand and abide by the rules.

ABB Induction
The ABB Induction programme not only introduces you to the group it gives you a unique opportunity to meet your peers as well as senior company managers. This programme takes place over four days, one day a month in your early time with ABB, at different ABB locations.

Core skills
During the three-day residential ‘core skills’ event you will cover modules including communication skills, time management. presentation skills and team work to help throughout the rest of your career. Here, you will develop your interpersonal skills - influencing others, listening effectively and negotiating.

Team development
From Day One you will be part of a team. In fact you may find yourself involved in several teams. Apart from your immediate colleagues you will work with anything from three to five other graduates on at least one special project set and supervised by senior ABB managers. This will be a project dealing with real challenges facing the company. You will be able to get your teeth into the task, work out solutions with fellow graduates and at the end of three months present your proposals directly to the senior managers.

Introductory certificate in line management
During your second year with the company we give you the opportunity to participate in the introductory certificate in line management. This can be a valuable stepping stone on your management career.

Mentoring
When you join the company you will be assigned a colleague as a mentor, usually a chartered engineer. The mentor’s job is to guide you through the early stages of your career and to support you in your work and help you if you choose to work towards a CEng qualification.

Buddy
To help you get to know your way round the organisation we will give a ‘buddy’, a colleague who help you settle in and who will help you ‘get to know the ropes’.

Assignments
We will do all we can to help you get the knowledge and experience you need during your development phase and if you choose to work towards chartered engineer status. There is the possibility of inter-company secondments as well as international travel.

Engineering institutions
We actively encourage all graduates to work towards membership of the professional engineering bodies (IEE, IChemE, IMechE, InstMC, etc) as part of their career development plan. We will do all we can to support you in this. We have recently been reaccredited by IChemE for five years.

Making your dreams come true
With ABB you can realise your ambitions. We will support whatever route you take. Find out more by reading our graduate profiles.
